sluggish: slow-moving or lacking energy to move

burrow : dig a hole

scurry : run away in a hurry

sluggish : slow

manifest : appear

in the guise of X : wearing X

All living creatures are influenced by the external temperatures of their environment. The ambient air temperature can thus cause an animal’s body temperature to fluctuate. The way that an animal regulates its body temperature plays a vital role in its ability to survive in extreme environments as well as in its lifestyle and habitat. For the most part, animals are either warm blooded or cold blooded. The vast majority of mammals and birds are warm blooded while reptiles, fish, insects, and amphibians are cold blooded. Each type of animal employs various methods to control its body temperature. However, in general, warm-blooded animals can maintain a constant internal temperature no matter what environment they are in while cold-blooded animals’ body temperatures are related to the temperature of their external environment. These facts play a large role in determining where these animals are found and what their lifestyles are.

Warm-blooded animals control their internal body temperature through their metabolism. This means that they convert food into energy, which is then used to keep their bodies at a more-or-less constant temperature. For example, humans maintain a normal temperature of around ninety-seven degrees Fahrenheit. When the weather is too hot, warm-blooded animals sweat to cool their bodies. When the weather is too cold, they may consume more food to burn more energy, or they may shiver to increase muscle activity, which will produce more heat. Some warm-blooded animals maintain constant high metabolic rates so that they can sustain their body temperatures in all environments. Additionally, warm-blooded creatures that dwell in very cold environments tend to have greater external protection. This may manifest itself in the guise of fur, hair, and feathers. Humans also wear clothing for protection; the colder the temperature, the thicker the clothing.

Cold-blooded creatures are directly affected by the ambient air temperature. When it is too hot or cold, they depend on a variety of methods to maintain their body temperature. For example, reptiles often lie in direct sunlight when the temperature is cool. When it gets too hot, they scurry for the shade of a tree or rock, or they burrow underground. Some cold-blooded animals even migrate to warmer climates when winter comes, or they go into hibernation for several months of the year. Even some warm-blooded creatures, such as bears, hibernate in extremely cold conditions. Cold-blooded creatures cannot stay in a cold environment for too long, though, since they become sluggish and will eventually perish without heat to warm themselves.

There are both advantages and disadvantages to being warm or cold blooded. The most obvious advantage for warm-blooded creatures is that they can live in practically any environment on Earth. That does not, however, mean that they can always survive in harsh environments. In extreme heat, warm-blooded creatures will sweat until they become dehydrated and will expire if they fail to drink a sufficient amount of water. In a desert, this can become a major problem, which is why most desert creatures are cold blooded. In addition, the need to consume food to sustain body temperature is a disadvantage for warm-blooded creatures. Burning food and shivering to maintain body temperature requires tremendous amounts of energy. If there is not a large food supply, warm-blooded creatures will die in extremely cold environments. Cold-blooded creatures, however, can survive on less food and endure longer periods of time without eating. Some snakes, for instance, can go for several weeks or even months without feeding a single time. Their metabolism is slower than warm-blooded creatures since they do not depend on burning energy to maintain their body temperature.

Warm-blooded animals have other advantages in that they can hunt and defend themselves in a wide variety of environments whereas cold-blooded creatures are sluggish and more easily attacked in a cold environment. However, warm-blooded creatures pay a price for these advantages. They are more prone to be hosts for bacteria and viruses, which need warmer temperatures to survive. Almost all human diseases originally started as either bacteria or a virus in warm-blooded birds or mammals. On the other hand, being hosts to these microorganisms simultaneously helps warm-blooded creatures build up immunities to them.
